Hempel's Favourite Varnish is a high-quality full gloss marine varnish that gives wood surfaces a deep shine and long-lasting protection in demanding marine conditions. Quick guide
- Clean and dry the wooden surface thoroughly.
- Sand the surface in the direction of the wood grain.
- Thin the first coat by 20%.
- Apply the second coat thinned by 10%.
- Finally, apply 3 full coats of varnish.
- Lightly sand between coats for the best gloss.

Instructions for use and work order
Pre-treatment
New wooden surfaces
- Sand the surface with P80–P120 sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain.
- Remove dust thoroughly.
- Wipe the surface with Hempel's Thinner 811.
- Oily wood species such as teak and iroko should be degreased with Hempel's Degreaser.
Previously varnished surfaces
- Wash the surface thoroughly.
- Remove flaking or deteriorated varnish.
- Sand the surface to a matte finish with P220 sandpaper.
- Remove dust thoroughly before varnishing.
Painting system
Recommended varnish system
- 1 coat of Hempel's Favourite Varnish thinned by 20%
- 1 coat thinned by 10%
- 3 coats of Hempel's Favourite Varnish
If necessary, up to 5% thinner can be added depending on working conditions.
Painting conditions
- Recommended temperature: +10°C – +25°C
- Relative humidity below 65%
- Not in direct sunlight
- Not on damp wood
- Wood moisture below 13%
- Good ventilation improves drying

If the maximum recoat time is exceeded, the surface should be lightly sanded before the next coat.
Painting tips
- Use a high-quality varnish brush.
- Apply several thin coats for better durability.
- Light sanding between coats with P240–P320 paper improves adhesion and gloss.
- Always remove dust before the next coat.
- Close the can lid during application to prevent solvent evaporation.
