Painting instructions for polyethylene boats – with Hempel products
Maintaining polyethylene boats can be challenging, as the greasy surface of the material prevents paint from adhering. However, Hempel has successfully tested the method described below, which allows polyethylene boats to be painted durably.
Painting below the waterline
- Wash the surface thoroughly with Hempel Degreaser.
- Sand the surface with grit 80 using wet sandpaper moistened with Hempel Degreaser.
- Remove sanding dust by wiping the surface again with Hempel Degreaser.
- Immediately apply 1 coat of Hempel Sealer 599 epoxy solution.
- After Hempel Sealer 599 has dried for 30–60 minutes, apply 1 coat of Hempel Hard Racing Xtra antifouling paint.
- Apply a second coat of Hempel Hard Racing Xtra just before launching.
Painting above the waterline
- Prepare the surface as described for below the waterline.
- Apply 2 coats of Hempel PolyGloss topcoat (do not use antifouling paint above the waterline).
ABS boats (e.g., Terhi) – painting instructions below the waterline
ABS plastic is used in e.g. Terhi boats, and painting it requires gentler preparatory agents:
- Wash the surface thoroughly with Hempel PreClean detergent. Avoid strong solvents.
- Lightly sand the surface and remove sanding dust.
- Apply 1 coat of Hempel Light Primer, thinned with 20% Hempel Thinner 845.
- Apply 1 coat of Hempel Light Primer unthinned.
- Apply 2 coats of Hempel Hard Racing Xtra.
- The first coat of Hempel Hard Racing Xtra should be applied while Hempel Light Primer is still tacky (within 1.5–2 hours).
