Why choose Maston Vernissa?
Maston Vernissa is an excellent choice when a traditional, additive-free linseed oil-based product is desired for wood protection. Boiled linseed oil penetrates the wood and highlights its natural appearance while improving the durability of the wood surface.
The product is also suitable for making your own paints, such as red ochre paints and traditional oil paint mixtures. As varnish does not contain solvents or additives, it is a good option for users seeking the simplest and most traditional wood treatment agent possible.

Instructions for Use and Work Procedure
Start by thoroughly cleaning the wood surface to be treated. The surface must be dry, dust-free, grease-free, and absorbent. Varnish works best on untreated or previously oiled wood surfaces, where it can penetrate.
If the surface has old paint, varnish, or other film-like treatments, the varnish will not penetrate properly. Such treatments must be removed before using the varnish if the goal is a protective oil treatment that penetrates the wood.
Apply Maston Vernissa in a thin layer with a brush, cloth, or other suitable tool. Avoid too thick a layer, as excess oil can remain sticky on the surface and slow down drying. Allow the product to penetrate the wood and wipe off any excess unabsorbed varnish with a lint-free cloth.
If you use Maston Vernissa to make your own paints, such as red ochre paint or oil paint, always make a small test batch first. This ensures the product's compatibility with other raw materials before mixing the main paint batch.
Pre-treatment
The surface must be:
- dry
- clean
- grease-free
- dust-free
- absorbent
- free of loose paint, varnish, or other film-like treatments
Greyed, dirty, or worn wood should be cleaned and, if necessary, lightly sanded before treatment. Remove sanding dust carefully. For dense or previously treated wood, it is advisable to do a test application before treating the entire surface.
Painting System
Wood surface varnishing:

Self-made paints:
Maston Vernissa can be used in the production of traditional paints, such as red ochre paints and oil paints. Always make a small test batch before the main production batch.
For boating applications: suitable for traditional oil treatment of wooden parts and as a raw material for paint mixtures. Not suitable for antifouling treatment, fiberglass, metal, or as a replacement for modern primer/topcoat systems.
Painting Conditions
Use the product in dry conditions and treat only dry wood. Avoid treatment in rain, on damp surfaces, or in extremely cold conditions. Ensure good ventilation indoors.
Protect surrounding surfaces from splashes. Store the product in a dry and cool place, out of reach of children.
Recoating Times
| Step | Time / instruction |
|---|---|

| Removal of excess varnish | When unabsorbed product remains on the surface |
| Further treatment | When the surface is sufficiently dry |
| Maintenance treatment | When the wood surface appears dry or loses its protective properties |
| Usage period after opening | approx. 3–6 months, when the cap is tightly closed and the product is stored in a dry and cool place |
Drying time is affected by wood type, application amount, temperature, ventilation, and air humidity.
