Why choose Maston Boat Tar?

Maston Boat Tar is the right choice when you want a traditional tar treatment for a wooden boat. The more fluid consistency helps the tar to penetrate the wood more effectively, giving the wooden surface a natural dark brown shade and water-repellent protection.

The product can be used as is or mixed with linseed oil or Maston Conifer Turpentine. This creates a traditional boatman's mixture, which spreads and penetrates well. The coverage of the boatman's mixture is approximately 4–7 m²/l.

Instructions for use and work procedure

Start by checking that the surface to be treated is wood and that it is either untreated or previously tarred. Maston Boat Tar is not suitable for painted or varnished surfaces, as the film-like surface prevents the tar from being absorbed.

Clean the wooden surface from dirt, dust, grease and loose old tar. If the surface has old peeling or thick tar, remove loose material before new treatment. The surface must be dry and absorbent.

Mix Maston Boat Tar thoroughly before application. Apply the product with a brush, sponge or lint-free cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Boat tar is more fluid than wood tar, so it penetrates the wood well and is especially suitable for the traditional treatment of wooden boats.

Allow the tar to penetrate the wood. Boat tar does not dry in the same way as paint or varnish, but is absorbed into the pores of the wood. When the tar has been absorbed, the surface feels dry to the touch. If there is excess, unabsorbed tar on the surface, wipe it off with a lint-free cloth.

If necessary, Maston Boat Tar can be mixed with linseed oil or Maston Conifer Turpentine. This mixture produces a traditional boatman's mixture, which has a coverage of approximately 4–7 m²/l. Maston Conifer Turpentine is used for thinning and cleaning tools.

Pre-treatment

The surface must be:

  • wood
  • dry
  • clean
  • dust-free
  • absorbent
  • untreated or previously tarred

Not for painted or varnished surfaces. Paint and varnish surfaces must be completely removed before tarring if the surface is to be treated with Maston Boat Tar. Tar needs an absorbent wooden surface to work properly.

On a previously tarred surface, loose, dirty or thick tar must be removed before new treatment. Dry and worn wood may absorb more tar, increasing consumption.

Painting system

Traditional boat tar treatment for wooden boats:

  1. Ensure that the surface is untreated or previously tarred wooden surface
  2. Remove dirt, dust and loose old tar
  3. Allow the surface to dry
  4. Mix Maston Boat Tar thoroughly
  5. Apply with a brush, sponge or lint-free cloth
  6. Allow to penetrate the wood
  7. Wipe off excess unabsorbed tar
  8. Allow the surface to settle before use
  9. Repeat treatment as necessary according to the absorbency of the wood and the desired protection

Boatman's mixture:

Maston Boat Tar can be mixed with linseed oil or Maston Conifer Turpentine. The mixture provides a traditional, well-spreading treatment for wooden boats and other absorbent wooden surfaces.

Usage restriction in boats: suitable for traditional tarring of wooden boats. Not suitable for fiberglass boats, metal, painted surfaces, varnished surfaces, as antifouling treatment or as a replacement for modern primer/topcoat systems.

Painting conditions

Only treat dry wood. Avoid treatment in rain, humid conditions or when the surface may get wet before the tar has sufficiently absorbed.

The best result is achieved when the wood is dry and warm, but not strongly heated in direct sunlight. Ensure good ventilation, especially if using Maston Conifer Turpentine for thinning or cleaning tools.

Protect surrounding surfaces, as tar stains strongly and can be difficult to remove.

Recoating times

Phase Time / instruction
Absorption time Depends on wood quality, dryness and application amount
Touch-dry surface When tar has absorbed and the surface feels dry
Removal of excess tar Wipe off if unabsorbed tar remains on the surface
Additional layer If necessary, once the previous treatment has absorbed
Maintenance treatment When the surface is worn, dry or has lost its water repellency

Boat tar does not actually dry, but is absorbed into the wood. The time to put into use depends on the absorbency of the wood, the amount applied and the conditions.
