Hempel's Classic Varnish
Hempel's Classic Varnish is a traditional high-gloss boat varnish that enhances the natural grain pattern of genuine wood surfaces and provides long-lasting protection in demanding marine conditions. This high-quality alkyd varnish contains tung oil, which makes the varnish film flexible, durable, and exceptionally weather-resistant.
The full-gloss finish effectively protects wood surfaces from seawater, UV radiation, moisture, and wear. An excellent choice for boat wood parts, masts, mouldings, railings, doors, and other wood surfaces above the waterline.
Hempel's Classic Varnish is especially suitable for boaters who appreciate a classic mirror-gloss varnish finish and long-lasting protection even in harsh weather conditions.

Quick guide
- Clean and dry the wood surface thoroughly.

Instructions for Use and Working Procedure
Pre-treatment
New wood surfaces
- Sand the surface with P80–P120 sandpaper along the wood grain.
- Remove dust carefully.
- Wipe the surface with Hempel's Thinner 811.
- Oily wood types such as teak and iroko should be degreased with Hempel's Degreaser.
Previously varnished surfaces
- Wash the surface thoroughly.
- Remove loose or cracked varnish.
- Sand the surface to a matte finish with P220 sandpaper.
- Remove dust before varnishing.
Painting System
Recommended varnish system
- 1 coat of Hempel's Classic Varnish thinned by 20%
- 1 coat thinned by 10%
- 3 coats of Hempel's Classic Varnish
If necessary, add a maximum of 5% thinner according to working conditions.
Painting conditions
- Recommended temperature: +10°C – +25°C
- Humidity below 65%
- Not in direct sunlight
- Not on wet wood
- Wood moisture content below 13%
- Good ventilation speeds up drying

If the recoating time is exceeded, the surface must be lightly sanded before the next coat.
Painting tips
- Use a high-quality natural bristle brush.
- Apply thin and even coats.
- Lightly sand with P240–P320 paper between coats.
- Remove dust carefully before the next coat.
- The best result is achieved with several thin coats.

Full instructions for use:
1. Pre-treatment
- Ensure the surface is dry, clean, dust-free, oil-free, and grease-free.
- Wash the surface with a suitable cleaning agent, such as Hempel’s Cleaning Agent.
- Sand the surface with dry sandpaper and carefully remove sanding dust with water.
- New wood: If necessary, impregnate the surface withHempel’s Wood Impregproduct.
- Plywood: Seal the surface withHempel’s Sealerbefore varnishing.
- Ensure the moisture content is below 16%.
2. Mixing and thinner
- Mix Hempel’s Classic Varnish thoroughly before use.
- First coat:Thin with Hempel’s Thinner 811by a maximum of 20%.
- Second coat: Thin by a maximum of 10%.
- Subsequent coats: Use varnish unthinned (or with a maximum of 5% thinner).
3. Application methods
- Brush, roller or paint pad: use recommended thinning.
- Spraying: Contact Hempel’s technical support for more detailed instructions.
4. Painting conditions
- Apply varnish only if the air and surface temperature is at least 3 °C above the dew point.
- Relative humidity must be below 85% during drying.
- Avoid painting during rain, fog, or excessively high humidity.
5. Drying times with a 30-micron dry film thickness:
- Touch dry: 6 h (20 °C)
- Sandable: 24 h (20 °C)
- Launch: 20–72 h after drying
6. Number of coats and sanding
- Recommended number of coats: A total of 5 coats (2 thinned + 3 unthinned)
- Light sanding between coats is recommended for best results.
7. Surface maintenance and repair
- Inspect and maintain varnished surfaces regularly.
- If the surface is damaged, sand the damaged area and apply the necessary amount of varnish according to the instructions.
8. Cleaning of tools
- Wash tools immediately after use withHempel’s Thinner 811.
9. Safety instructions
- Wear protective clothing, gloves, and eye protection.
- Avoid inhaling vapours and sources of ignition in the work area.
- Always read the product safety data sheet before use.
