Fjord Wing ”Prinses Leya” at Vene 26 Båt Boat Show
The restored Fjord Wing motorboat ”Prinses Leya” is participating in the New Life for a Boat competition at the Vene 26 Båt Boat Show. The competition highlights boat recycling and restoration, demonstrating how an old boat can be returned to a functional, safe, and beautiful state through careful work and the right material choices.
Three project boats from those entered in the New Life for a Boat competition have been selected for the boat show. The boats will be judged based on appearance, safety, and functionality. The winner will be chosen by an esteemed panel of boating journalists, and there will also be a public vote held throughout the event. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded on the second Saturday of the Boat Show, February 14, 2026, at Venemestarin Telakka.
Yellow Classic Gets a New Life
In Tuusula, a striking yellow Fjord Wing motorboat ”Prinses Leya” has been restored by two long-time friends. The restoration was carried out by Lauri Koski, who works in the boat paint industry, and his school friend, mechanical engineer Pasi. The restoration project began two years ago when Pasi was convinced to join – and since then, the boat has been meticulously restored over several seasons.
“The boat restoration proved to be laborious, especially when you don't settle for mediocrity. The old Fjord Wing has a lot of aesthetically beautiful and mechanically fine elements that we wanted to preserve,” says Lauri.
Thorough Restoration Respecting the Original
The Fjord Wing ”Prinses Leya” has been almost entirely disassembled. All parts have been cleaned, inspected, finished, and reinstalled, respecting the original appearance. New parts have been carefully selected, whenever possible, to match the original or as recycled solutions.
The boat's Volvo Penta sterndrive engine has been disassembled, machined, and reassembled, and the cylinder head has also been machined. The instrument panel has been subtly updated, and a teak floor made from recycled wood has been built into the interior.
“The boat is almost as old as its owners. We wanted to show that even an old boat can be restored to be a reliable and beautiful companion for the sea,” Lauri states.
Products Used in the Restoration
The restoration utilized carefully selected surface treatment products:
