Hempel High Protect for Protection and Repair

Painting:

  • The base and hardener of Hempel High Protect are mixed together, initiating the product's chemical curing reaction.
  • Mix only the amount you can apply within the 45-minute pot life (at 20 ºC).
  • If the temperature is higher, the pot life will be shorter, so mix a smaller amount at a time in that case.
  • Apply Hempel High Protect with a felt roller (finish the surface with a brush for an even better finish).
  • Hempel High Protect should be applied in layers at least 200 microns thick.
  • Layer thickness can be measured with a wet film comb or by treating the entire surface area of the boat and calculating the amount of Hempel High Protect used per coat (1 liter of High Protect covers an area of 5 square meters at a thickness of 200 microns).
  • The minimum application temperature for Hempel High Protect is 10 °C.
  • The best results are achieved when the temperature remains consistent and humidity is low during application.
  • These conditions are best achieved by working under a cover. NOTE: High Protect should not be thinned.

Curing:

  • Hempel High Protect dries to touch in 6–8 hours.
  • If the temperature drops below 10 °C, the curing of High Protect will likely stop.
  • Curing will resume as the temperature rises, but insufficient curing temperature can cause amine blush.
  • This refers to the formation of a thin amine carbamate film on the epoxy surface.
  • Such a film must be removed with a degreaser or fresh water before overcoating.
  • When calculating recoating times, it is essential to avoid the layers drying completely.
  • It takes approximately 10 days for Hempel High Protect to fully cure at 20 °C.
  • Subsequent primer and antifouling coats can be applied immediately after applying Hempel High Protect.
  • However, it is advisable not to launch the boat before this time has passed to ensure the layer is fully cured.
  • For detailed additional information, please refer to the painting instructions.

How to achieve a good result:

  • If Hempel High Protect cannot be applied indoors, it is recommended to erect a protective canopy around the hull to provide shelter from the weather.
  • If Hempel High Protect is applied at 10 °C, store the product at normal room temperature before use.
  • Move the tape line slightly upwards with each coat to avoid a sharp and distinct edge at the waterline.
  • Hempel High Protect is available in two colors; alternate different colors in successive coats to ensure coverage of each layer.
  • Mix the base and hardener of Hempel High Protect thoroughly in their respective cans before mixing them together. Once combined, continue mixing for a uniform consistency.
  • Do not thin Hempel High Protect.
  • Careful surface preparation and strict adherence to all instructions are essential for a successful finish.
