Hempel Light Primer Instructions

Pre-treatment:
Always remember to ensure that all surfaces are clean, oil-free, and dry. Clean the surface and remove any oil and grease with a suitable cleaning agent, then sand the surface with dry sandpaper. Carefully remove dust with fresh water.

Painting:
Fiberglass:
Sand the surface and remove dust.

Steel:
Remove salt and other impurities by cleaning with (high-pressure) fresh water. Remove all rust and loose material by blast cleaning or wire brushing. Remove dust.

Aluminum:
Wash with fresh water and a pressure washer. Blast clean without metallic abrasives. Sand, clean, and dry the surface.

Plywood:
Sand the surface and remove dust. Seal dry and clean surface with a suitable Hempel Sealer 599.

Previously treated surface:
Sand, clean, and dry the surface.

Painting:

Unpainted surfaces below the waterline:
Prime porous surfaces by thinning the product used for the first coat as specified with Hempel Thinner 845: max. 20%.
Apply a total of 3–5 coats to achieve full film thickness.
If necessary, add thinner: max. 5%.
Overcoat with the specified HEMPEL primer/adhesion coat and selected antifouling paint while the product is still tacky.
It is crucial that aluminum surfaces are primed with a total dry film thickness of at least 300 microns.

Unpainted surfaces above the waterline:
