Why choose Maston Wood Tar?

Maston Wood Tar is an excellent choice when you want to protect wood in a traditional, natural way. The tar penetrates the wood, forming a beautiful translucent surface that repels water and helps protect the wood from outdoor conditions.

The product is undiluted and additive-free, so it can be used as is or thinned with Maston Pine Turpentine to enhance absorption. Wood tar can also be mixed with varnish, linseed oil, or Maston Pine Turpentine to create a traditional "old-fashioned tar paint."

Instructions for Use and Work Procedure

Clean the wood surface thoroughly before applying tar. The surface must be dry, clean, and free of dirt, dust, grease, and poorly adhering old surface treatments. Wood tar works best on an absorbent wood surface.

Mix Maston Wood Tar thoroughly before use. The product can be used as is, providing a rich and traditional tar finish. If you want to enhance absorption, thin the product with Maston Pine Turpentine up to 20%. Thinned tar absorbs better into dry and porous wood.

Apply wood tar with a brush, sponge, or cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Apply thin layers rather than one too thick layer at a time. The final color of the surface depends on the number of layers, application thickness, and the wood's natural shade.

Wood tar does not dry in the same way as paint or varnish; instead, it absorbs into the wood. Once the tar has absorbed, the surface will feel dry to the touch. If any excess, unabsorbed tar remains on the surface, wipe it off with a lint-free cloth, for example.

Maston Wood Tar can also be used to make traditional tar paint by mixing it with varnish, linseed oil, or Maston Pine Turpentine. This creates an old-fashioned tar paint type of treatment for wood surfaces.

Pre-treatment

The wood surface must be:

  • dry
  • clean
  • grease-free
  • dust-free
  • absorbent
  • free of loose old treatments

Old loose paint, varnish, or other film-forming treatments must be removed so that the tar can absorb into the wood. Grayed, dirty, or worn wood should be cleaned and, if necessary, lightly sanded before treatment. Remove sanding dust before applying the tar.

For new or very dry wood surfaces, thinning with Maston Pine Turpentine can improve absorption. For dense, hard, or previously treated wood, it is advisable to perform a test application before treating the entire surface.

Painting System

Traditional wood tar treatment:

  1. Clean the wood surface
  2. Allow the surface to dry
  3. Remove loose old treatments
  4. Lightly sand if necessary
  5. Remove dust
  6. Mix Maston Wood Tar thoroughly
  7. Use as is or thin up to 20% with Maston Pine Turpentine
  8. Apply with a brush, sponge, or cloth
  9. Allow to absorb
  10. Wipe off any excess, unabsorbed tar
  11. Allow the surface to settle before use

Old-fashioned tar paint:

Maston Wood Tar can be mixed with varnish, linseed oil, or Maston Pine Turpentine. This creates a traditional tar paint type of treatment for logs, fences, wooden boat parts, and other exterior wood surfaces.

For boating applications: Suitable for traditional wooden boats, wooden fittings, ropes, and other wooden surfaces where a tarred finish is desired. Not suitable for fiberglass, metal, as an antifouling treatment, or as a replacement for modern epoxy/paint systems below the waterline.

Painting Conditions

Use the product in dry conditions. The surface must be dry for the tar to absorb properly. Avoid treatment in rain, on wet surfaces, or in situations where rain could wet the surface before absorption.

The best results are achieved when the wood is dry and warm, but not overheated by direct sunlight. Ensure good ventilation, especially if working indoors or using pine turpentine as a thinner.

Protect surrounding surfaces, as tar stains strongly and can be difficult to remove from porous surfaces.

Recoating Times

Stage Time / Instruction
Absorption Depends on wood quality, dryness and application amount
Touch-dry surface When the tar has absorbed and the surface feels dry
Removal of excess tar When unabsorbed product remains on the surface
Additional coat If necessary, after the previous treatment has absorbed
Maintenance treatment When the surface is worn, dry, or has lost its water repellency

Wood tar does not actually dry, but absorbs into the wood. Therefore, the time until use depends on absorption, application thickness, and weather conditions.
