Epifanes Poly-urethane Clear Gloss with UV Filter is a premium 2-component boat varnish for demanding wood surface protection and finishing. It forms a high-gloss, clear, and durable varnish surface that highlights the natural depth of the wood while providing strong protection against UV radiation, weathering, chemicals, and mechanical wear.
This varnish is an excellent choice for a long-lasting and hard-wearing finish on the woodwork of boats above the waterline. It can be used as a standalone two-component varnish system on stable wood substrates or as a UV-protected finish varnish over epoxy resin. It also acts as an intermediate layer between epoxy-treated wood and Epifanes one-component varnishes.
According to Epifanes' system instructions, the first coat for mahogany and meranti should be thinned by 25% to allow the varnish to penetrate the wood fibers. After this, several coats are built up with decreasing thinning until a deep, glossy, and protective varnish surface is achieved. Coats can be applied within 24–48 hours without sanding; if the recoating interval exceeds 48 hours, the surface should always be sanded before the next coat.
Important: The product is not intended for the bottom of the boat or surfaces continuously submerged in water. The area of use is only above the waterline.
Brief instructions
- Ensure the wood is dry, clean, grease-free, and dust-free.
- Degrease according to wood type: mahogany and meranti can be cleaned with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish.
- Sand bare wood to P100–P220 grit along the wood grain. Very rough surfaces can be started with P60–P80 grit.
- Mix 2 parts component A + 1 part component B by weight.
- Allow the mixture to activate for 10–15 minutes before use.
- Apply the first coat thinned by 25% with Epifanes Poly-urethane Brushthinner.
- Apply subsequent coats at 24-hour intervals, gradually reducing the thinning.
- Recoat within 24–48 hours without sanding. If the interval exceeds 48 hours, sand the surface before the next coat.
