Removing old paint and antifouling
Removing old paint and antifouling is easy with Hempel’s Paint
Stripper, which is an effective solvent-based paint remover. It can be used on
most painted and varnished surfaces.
- You can estimate the time required for the job by first testing on a small area.
- Apply a generous amount of Hempel’s Paint Stripper to a dry surface with a brush or roller.
- Be careful when using the product on plastic surfaces (it may damage some thermoplastics, e.g. ABS).
- Do not work on too large an area at a time.
- After application, wait 15 – 30 minutes for the paint film to dissolve or detach. (Antifouling paints, alkyd paints, and varnishes react fastest,
while silicon and epoxy take longer to dissolve.) - It is recommended to cover the treated area with aluminum foil to prevent the active ingredients from evaporating too quickly.
- Scrape off the old paint and then clean the surface with hot water and Hempel’s Boat Shampoo.
- If the paint film is old or very thick, it may require repeated treatment to remove.
Cleaning and degreasing
Thorough pre-treatment is a prerequisite for successful painting. The surface to be painted must be clean and grease-free.
Cleaning
Hempel’s Pre-Clean is an effective detergent for pre-washing gelcoat and painted surfaces to remove fuel, oil, grease,
wax, and silicone. Use before painting and for deep cleaning.
• For general cleaning, use 1 part Hempel’s Pre-Clean in 20 parts water, and for more demanding cleaning, a ratio of 1:10.
• For alkali-sensitive surfaces such as aluminum, dilute the product with water at a ratio of 1:20.
• Do not use on untreated wood that may absorb water. Hempel’s Pre-Clean is also suitable for
cleaning hardened paint from brushes.
Degreasing
Remove surface dirt, especially waxes or silicone, from new gelcoat surfaces using Hempel’s Degreaser.
It cannot be used with traditional one-component paint systems, as Hempel’s Degreaser solvents may
damage the paint film.
• Work in a well-ventilated area and use a clean, absorbent, and
lint-free cloth dipped in Hempel’s Degreaser.
• Clean an area of about 1 m² at a time by moving the cloth lengthwise. Change the cloth before treating the next
section. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses.
• Wipe off excess Hempel’s Degreaser from the surface with a new dry cloth.
